Position:          Associate Pastor

 

Category:        Full-time, exempt

 

Reports to:      Senior Pastor (all positions are indirectly responsible to the Steering Committee and Church Council – in that order)

 

Overview:

The Associate Pastor is primarily responsible for working closely with the Senior Pastor in leading the church through the preaching and teaching of God’s Word, development and refining of church vision, general church administration, and oversight of family ministries. The Associate Pastor is responsible for living and proclaiming the Gospel of Christ and encouraging the local church body to do so, guiding the spiritual development of the congregation, and providing pastoral care in meeting the needs of persons in the church and community.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Senior Pastor in vision casting and leadership of the church’s teaching.
  • Work with the Senior Pastor to ensure weekend services are planned and executed. When requested, provide feedback to the Senior Pastor or other speakers on their sermons or teachings.
  • Preach or teach several times a year. Be prepared to be the backup speaker in case of a last-minute need.  Always have an “emergency sermon” ready.
  • Know the congregation by showing an intense interest in them. This includes getting to know active church members' personal and family stories.
  • New member orientation class.
  • Intentionally build relationships with the congregation.  Tend to the spiritual needs of the congregation as one who will give an account to God.
  • Educate the congregation to make disciples who make disciples by reaching, teaching, training, and sending them into the community and world. 
  • Recruit, teach, train, spiritually support, and effectively supervise volunteers for small groups and ministries within the church.
  • Provide staff supervision and guidance for the planning, coordinating, and evaluating the total education and discipleship ministries.
  • Serve as the Sunday School Director.
  • Develop education and training programs for church Sunday School and Small Group teachers, including but not limited to teacher training, quarterly teacher’s meetings, and study seminars.
  • Work with the Senior Pastor and church leadership to provide a safe and secure environment.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Devoted and joyful disciple of Jesus Christ, abiding in Christ and devoted to prayer and the word of God.
  • Must be a born-again believer.
  • Possesses personality, temperament, and interpersonal skills to relate and serve effectively within a multi-generational congregation setting.
  • Exhibit evidence of Christian character and servant leadership as stated in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, and 1 Peter 5:1-4 in the work environment and the home/family setting.
  • Lead a spiritually balanced life (prayer, Bible study, rest, worship, financial stewardship, etc.).
  • Doctrinally aligned with PIBC’s Statement of Faith, doctrinal positions, mission, and core values  
  • Exceptional speaking skills and the ability to speak confidently before groups (i.e., to preach and teach effectively).
  • Ability to listen effectively and to communicate clearly, both orally and in written form. Is a team player with effective relational and conflict management skills.
  • Self-starter with a positive attitude.
  • Strong work ethic and personal integrity.
  • Exceptional administrative and organizational skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality where appropriate.  
  • Basic ability to use computer software, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Bachelor’s degree in religion, ministry, or related field.
  • Five years or more of pastoral experience as an Associate or Youth Pastor.
