Children’s Minister Job Description

Summary

Children’s ministry means equipping parents with opportunities and resources to fulfill God’s plan for the family (Deut. 6:1-9) and create environments where children and parents become thirsty for God (Matt. 5:6).

 

As used in the remainder of this Job Description, the term “children” includes both preschoolers as well as grade school children. 

 

Mandate

Our God’s desire is to, “turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their father…” (Mal. 4:6).  The Children’s Minister will thus serve to give leadership to those ministries of Elmont Baptist Church that assist parents and their children to grow in love and harmony with each other while shepherding parents and their children toward a vibrant relationship with their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

 

Biblical Requirements

A mature Christian who understands his areas of giftedness and who seeks to live according to

Biblical qualifications such as those given in Ephesians 5:22-33, 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.

 

Purpose

  • Provide vision, direction, discipleship development, outreach coordination and management for all aspects of ministry to families of children.
  • Supervise paid staff, lay leaders/teachers, and volunteers.
  • Provide oversight of curriculum planning, programming, facility use for ministry activities, and budgets.

 

Status

  • Full Time/Salary
  • Work hours may be non-traditional depending on ministry activities.

 

Supervisor

Lead Pastor of Elmont Baptist Church

 

Responsibilities

  • Organize and oversee the overall children’s ministries and activities including the nursery, children’s Sunday School, kid’s church, KidZone, and kid’s camp.
  • Provide oversight of church systems that pertain to the discipleship, care, and outreach of the church. This will include recruitment, training, equipping leaders, and program leadership that minister to our families of children.
  • Establish ongoing communication with the parents and initiate family-faith growth opportunities that train parents, provide resources to parents, or provide family discipleship opportunities.
  • Develop relational connections with our schools and community that reach new families and assimilate them into church.
  • Oversee child protection in all areas of children’s ministry.
  • Assist the Lead Pastor as required.

 

 

Skills

  • Efficient organization and excellent administrative skills.
  • Proven ability to apply wisdom in counseling.
  • Time management that demonstrates a pursuit of godliness resulting in fruit in the lives of believers.
  • Proven ability to work with children and shift gears to work with adults equally as well.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an aptitude for and experience in teaching and preaching.

 

 

Education/Experience

  • Formal experience in local church ministry a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and work with teams.

 

Doctrine

  • Must agree with the Statement of Faith of Elmont Baptist Church.

 

Leadership

  • A people person with a shepherd’s heart.
  • Leads children from a Christ-centered heart (Mark 12:30)
  • Develops children to become Christ-followers (Matthew 16:24)

 

Accountability

  • Effective accountability assumes honesty and integrity in ministerial and personal affairs. Effective accountability is meant to be a blessing to all involved as mutual encouragement and motivation to righteousness takes place. It is marked by seeking, receiving, and offering advice, suggestions, direction, and vision.
  • Ministry accountability and administrative accountability is to the Lead Pastor. Examples of ministry accountability include such things as annual review, vision and goals for ministry. Examples of administrative accountability include such things as time management, mileage, phone use, internet and social media use, expense accounts, punctuality, days off, and vacations.

 

Expectations

The Children’s Minister’s position exists to support/complement parental ministry in the home, not replace it. It is, in part, to turn the hearts of the children to their Fathers (Malachi 4:6). Hence, efforts to tie parents into the children programs are necessary.

 

The Children’s Minister must demonstrate the skills of biblical leadership in the home to provide a model of the good news and grace of the Gospel.

 

General Expectations:

  • Be committed to holiness and a personal walk with God in order to model and lead others in their faith.
  • Disciple your children to know God and love Him (if a parent). The active and strategic discipleship of your own children must be a higher priority than your discipleship of others.
  • Participate as a member of the pastoral staff team and be available to assist in pastoral duties as opportunities arise.
  • The Children’s Minister’s spouse is expected to understand that ministry work hours are not conventional (i.e. nine to five, 40 – 55 hours per week). The spouse is encouraged to support/assist in developing relationships with church members and their families.
  • The Children’s Minister and spouse must be a team with the spouse also being involved in some aspect of church ministry. However, the spouse’s involvement in church ministry should not take priority over family responsibilities.
  • The Children’s Minister and spouse are encouraged to be visible and accessible to the congregation through personal hospitality in their home, and being available at regular church services and church functions.

 


 

Specific Expectations:

  • Leadership
    • Provide vision, direction, development, and management for all aspects of ministry to children and their families.  
    • Recruit, train, encourage and coach leaders and teachers in children’s ministries.
    • Provide oversight in ongoing strategic development of curriculum, programming, facility, budgets, and planning for children’s ministries. This will involve meeting with paid staff, volunteers, the Lead Pastor, and networking with other pastoral staff.

 

 

  • Service and Outreach
    • Work with paid and volunteer staff to reach out to families in the community. Examples include attending extra-curricular activities of children, VBS, and the development of new service and outreach initiatives.
    • Be proactive in visiting local schools for the advancement of Christ.

 

  • Pastoral Care
    • Provide pastoral care for families of children.
    • Provide pastoral care for other church members as needed. Examples include hospital visitation, counseling, and baptisms.

 

  • Curriculum
    • Research and select long range curriculum that is age appropriate for
    • Develop long range curriculum as needed.

 

  • Parent-Child Discipleship
    • Equip parents to pass on their faith to the next generation by discipling their children.
    • Work with the Lead Pastor to develop and implement an ongoing strategy to help parent’s fulfill their calling to be the primary spiritual trainers of their children.

 

  • Training
    • Continuously strive to learn and incorporate into children’s ministry the best procedures and methods through online resources, personal study, and attendance at seminary classes or other clinics, conferences, and workshops.
    • Develop training opportunities for children by preparing them to become responsible followers of Christ with His mission as the objective (Matthew 28:18-20).
    • Provide periodic training sessions for all workers and teachers.
