DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AND WORSHIP

Job Description

 

  1. PURPOSE

            The Director of Music and Worship is a man called of God, adequately trained, and committed to following God's leadership in his ministry.  He will be committed to the planning, conducting, and evaluation of all music and worship ministries of the church by building an atmosphere of spiritual worship that brings honor, praise, and glory to God.

 

  1. DESCRIPTION OF FUNCTIONS

 

  1. WORSHIP

 

  1. THE PLANNING OF WORSHIP
  2. Works under the leadership of the senior pastor to plan worship services.
  3. Is responsible for scheduling of special music and offertories for all worship services.
  4. Makes the selection of music (hymns, choruses, and specials) that would be appropriate for each particular worship service in a timely manner.
  5. Prepares the weekly order of worship (morning and evening) and submits it to the secretary for printing in a timely manner.
  6. Makes successful contact with every person involved in leading worship for that particular week in a timely manner.
  7. Makes sure the worship center is ready for the worship service. This includes the following but is not limited to: musical instruments, sound and AV tech personnel and devices, etc.

 

  1. WORSHIP LEADERSHIP
  2. Provides corporate worship leadership on Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings, Wednesdays, and all other special worship events.
  3. Helps create, by example, a strong spirit of praise and fellowship in the worship services.

 

  1. SOUND, LIGHTING AND MEDIA FOR WORSHIP
  2. Enlists and trains sound, lighting, and media personnel in use and control of all equipment for worship services.
  3. Coordinates schedule of operators for each worship service.
  4. Coordinates any special lighting needs or shades to be drawn for special events.
  5. Coordinates the setup of projectors, TV's, DVD players as needed for worship.

 

  1. USHERS IN THE WORSHIP SERVICE
  2. Works with the head usher to enlist and train ushers to implement proper usher techniques.
  3. Works with the head usher to coordinate schedule of ushers for each worship service.
  4. Works with the head usher to enlist ushers for special events (i.e., Live Nativity, Musicals, Dramas and Youth led services.
  5. DRAMA MINISTRY
  6. Provides leadership for the Drama Ministry.
  7. Enlists directors and actors for Dramas and Skits to be performed for the church.
  8. Coordinates schedule of rehearsals and performances.

 

  1. MUSIC

 

  1. THE PLANNING, ORGANIZING, CONDUCTING AND EVALUATING OF A COMPREHENSIVE MUSIC PROGRAM
  2. Directs or provides leadership help for the churches Music Ministries (i.e., Adult, Youth, Children's, Preschool, and Senior Adult Choirs, mixed ensembles, bell choir, men's chorus, women's chorus, instrumental ensembles and orchestra to accompany the worship services.)
  3. Enlists and trains leaders for the Church Music Ministries.
  4. Lead and direct youth choir and youth missions and choir trips.

 

  1. SPECIAL EVENTS IN THE CHURCH
  2. Develops and encourages seasonal music programs throughout the year, including Easter, Patriotic (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Veterans Day), Thanksgiving, Live Nativity, and Christmas.
  3. Arranges and provides music and musicians for weddings, funerals, special projects, ministries, and other church-related activities upon request.
  4. Plans, organizes, and promotes adult choir tours, music festivals, workshops, clinics, and special presentations for the various music groups of the church.

 

  1. ADMINISTRATING THE MUSIC MINISTRY
  2. Maintains the music library, materials, supplies, musical instruments, and other music-related equipment.
  3. Keeps informed of the latest music, music methods, materials, promotions, and administration.
  4. Prepares an annual music budget for approval; administers the approved budget.
  5. Supervises the work of assigned paid staff workers.
  6. Cooperates with the association and state leaders in promoting activities of mutual interest.
  7. Gives direction for developing and maintaining all music groups.

 

  1. INSTRUCTION
  2. Provides personal instruction and rehearsal for soloists and instrumentalists for worship.
  3. Provides voice training for choir members as needed.
  4. Adapts directing skills to the culture of the choir and instrumentalists.

 

  1. ADDITIONAL MINISTRIES

 

  1. Leads and participates, by example, in church evangelical outreach.
  2. Serves as Church Administrative Council member.
  3. Serves as resource person/advisor to Senior Adult Ministry.
  4. Recruits, trains, and forms church orchestra.

  1. Is a strong, Spirit-led Christian.
  2. Is a strong Christian example in family life, total stewardship, and Christian conduct.
  3. Has had musical training.
  4. Is a spiritually gifted singer and musician.
  5. Is skilled in administration and organization.
  6. Is able to work under the leadership of the senior pastor and to effectively cooperate with staff and church members.
  7. Is a visionary leader who is a self-starter with a passion to launch new ministries.
