Education: College degree and formal theological training preferred but not required

Principal Function

This person will serve as the primary shepherding leader for JH/HS students (6ththrough 12thgrade). Out of an overflow of his own personal walk with Jesus, this person will pray and care for students, and teach and lead them through his words and example. Leading our students spiritually is too great a task for one individual. We need a shepherd leader who can help multiply leaders (adults and students) so that more and more students are encouraged and challenged to follow Jesus more closely and equipped to lead others to do the same.

Character and Competency Qualifications

A candidate must be:

  • A born again believer in Jesus Christ
  • Able to affirm the Baptist Faith and Message 2000
  • Humble, yet hard worker able to take initiative for the benefit of students
  • Good people skills/relational
  • Able to connect, include, and care for all different types of students
  • A relationship builder and a disciple-maker
  • A good fit in terms of chemistry and ministry philosophy with our staff and church as a whole
  • Team builder and team player
  • A gifted teacher and teachable
  • Gifted musically (preferred but not required)
  • Able to work well with all ages in the church and sees his role as playing a part in the whole of the church (not silo-minded)
  • Abletocultivate relationships with parents to strengthen partnership and communication with them

Vernon is located approximately two and a half hours northwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It’s a family-oriented community with a population of around 11,000. You’ll find a small-town feel with salt of the earth people who love big. Vernon is full of year-round activities and events.

About First Baptist Church Vernon

Our church is made up of people from various ages and walks of life. We have members of various professional backgrounds, including city officials, educators, health care professionals, ranchers, farmers, business owners, homemakers, and almost everything else in between. Our average attendance on Sunday morning pre-COVID was around 250 and we are starting to see numbers close to that as things return to normal. Our annual budget is $875,000. FBC Vernon is passionate about equipping our members 1) to follow Jesus more closely and 2) to help others follow Him more closely.
