Greenwood is a community about 15 miles east of Midland, TX and 10 miles
southwest of Stanton, TX. The fifteen or so mile stretch of road running
through Greenwood (FM 307) was home to several farms in the early
1900s. These farming families worked and worshipped together regularly,
quickly forming a community. This community followed the lead of the
church and became known as Greenwood, named after the Christian
missionaries Reverend Green and Reverend Wood.
The church was originally held in a saloon but in 1926 was moved to a plot
of land at the intersection of FM 307 and FM 1379 . Greenwood Baptist
Church (GBC) remains at this intersection today, which is directly across
the street from the public schools.
Classified as a 4A district, Greenwood Independent School District (GISD)
has the highest rated schools in the Midland area, which is a major draw for
people moving here. GBC enjoys a rich and open relationship with the
administration, staff, and school board. GBC has a history of loving this
community and ministering to the children who attend the public school.
The church works alongside the other churches in Greenwood to serve and
meet the needs of the community.
Greenwood remains an agricultural community but has seen the arrival of
many city conveniences. A Dollar General, convenience store, urgent care
clinic, and several places to grab a quick meal can be found along the main
road. Most people in Greenwood find themselves in Midland on a regular
basis for doctor/dentist visits, the bulk of their shopping, a multitude of
errands, and their job.
The main industries in Midland are oil and gas, along with agriculture. The
weather is hot and dry, with an average rainfall of 12 inches/year. The wind
is sure to blow and with few trees and no mountains, the scorching heat or
bone chilling cold is a fact of life. It has been said of Midland, “There isn’t
much to look at but the people are great.” Greenwood Baptist Church and
the Greenwood community are home to the greatest people on earth.
